U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., proposed a bill Thursday requiring the U.S. State Department to inform Congress on Guantanamo Bay prisoners being transferred.
The bill comes in response to President Barack Obama’s announcement Tuesday that addressed his plan to close Guantanamo Bay prison.
Johnson’s bill requires Congress to be notified of information about the detainees being transferred to the U.S., as well as information on former detainees of Guantanamo Bay that have been transferred abroad.
“The American people deserve to know when and where President Obama plans to transfer detainees,” Johnson said in a press release.
He added that this information “should be public, not hidden by unnecessary classification.”
Obama’s plan targets 13 potential domestic sites where prisoners could be transferred.
