UW-Madison recognizes the four 2016 Hilldale Award winners

UW-Madison announced Thursday the 2016 winners of the Hilldale Award, which recognizes a scholar from each of the four faculty divisions for their contributions to teaching, research and service.

Professor of curriculum and instruction and educational policy studies Michael Apple won the award for the social sciences division. Apple has advised more than 100 graduate students and published roughly 50 books, according to a university release.

Chemistry professor Laura Kiessling won the Hilldale Award for the physical sciences division. Kiessling has been a leader in the fields of chemistry, biochemistry, biology and medicine throughout the past two decades, according to the release.

UW-Madison awarded Steve Stern, a history professor, the award for the arts and humanities division. Stern has worked towards UW-Madison inclusion and diversity and he won the 2009 Faculty-Staff Ally of the Year Award for LGBTQ People from the UW–Madison Committee on LGBT Issues.

Professor of molecular virology Paul Ahlquist received the award in the biological sciences division. Two separate departments nominated Ahlquist for the award, and both referenced his research record, according to the university release.

The four winners will receive a cash prize of $7,500 and will be formally recognized by the Faculty Senate during an April 4 meeting.
