The UW System will host its 13th annual Posters in the Rotunda student research event at the Capitol Wednesday, followed by an opportunity for UW students, faculty and alumni to meet with state legislators and advocate for the system.
Roughly 140 undergraduates and 90 faculty mentors, representing all 26 campuses in the UW System, are expected to fill the rotunda after a 9:30 a.m. welcome and introduction from System President Ray Cross.
Research projects and findings span a wide variety of topics, including using Snapchat as a tool to help persons with language impairment, monitoring carbon dioxide and methane levels above landfills, examining carbohydrate consumption during workouts and connecting farmers through social networks.
Cross praised the UW System for its innovative research projects in a Tuesday press release.
“The issues being addressed or investigated by UW students are real-life issues affecting Wisconsin citizens and communities. The research being done here has the potential to inform public policy and decisions made by the private sector,” Cross said. “It is a powerful illustration of the UW System’s ongoing commitment to the Wisconsin Idea.”
Many of the projects involved multiple years of research and input from faculty and community members, according to the release.
The system will also host UW Day at the Capitol, which provides students, faculty and alumni with an opportunity to meet with state legislators and learn how to advocate effectively for the system’s priorities and goals. UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank will open the event with an introductory briefing.
