The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program, a national initiative established in 1986, received 1,150 nominations, but awarded only 252 scholarships. All four nominations from UW-Madison received the prestigious award, according to a university release.
The four winners are sophomore Idris Boukahil, senior Bailey G. Flanigan, junior Hannah M. Mast and junior Thejas S. Wesley.
All four UW-Madison winners said they hope to pursue a doctorate in their respective field of study and eventually teach at the university level, according to the release.
Boukahil is majoring in applied physics and mathematics, engineering and physics (AMEP). Flanigan, who is majoring in biomedical engineering, said she hopes to conduct cancer research. Mast is pursuing a major in biochemistry so she can eventually conduct research related to neurological disorders. Pursuing a chemical engineering major, Wesley said he wants to conduct research in heterogeneous catalysis.
UW-Madison Goldwater Scholars also have a history of receiving additional national scholarships as they continue their academic careers.
