Increase in state funding announced to speed road construction

Gov. Scott Walker announced Wednesday state funding to complete almost 50 town road and municipal street improvement projects throughout the state.

Projects set to be financed are selected by recommendations from the statewide discretionary improvement committees, whose members were nominated by the Wisconsin Towns Association and the League of Wisconsin Municipalities. Three Dane County projects in Cross Plains, Sun Prairie and Albion are up for funding.

According to the official release, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation will administer a total of $12.9 million in state funds for 42 projects through a fund designed for road improvement. The projects are predicted to cost more than $25 million.

Another eight projects will also be financed through the Municipal Street Discretionary Improvement Program, which provides state funds for city and village street improvement projects costing more than $250,000. The eight selected projects are predicted to cost more than $4 million.

“These awards are yet another way the state partners with municipalities to complete projects promoting economic development and supporting public safety,” Walker said in a statement. “Wisconsin’s transportation system plays a crucial role in our economic success, and many state businesses rely upon our roads and streets to get their goods from point A to point B.”

According to the release, the DOT is set to reimburse half of total eligible project costs, depending on available funds and total amount of awards granted. The projects could each take upward of a decade to complete.
