The UW System Board of Regents will consider an initiative from UW-Madison to raise the school’s undergraduate application fee during its meeting Thursday.
Although the comprehensive increase in application fees will apply to all system schools beginning in September, UW System spokesperson Alex Hummel said UW-Madison’s decision to submit the proposed resolution stems largely from the school’s upcoming use of the Common Application.
UW-Madison has requested the undergraduate application fee be raised to $60, a move that will cover new costs created by the Common Application, according to the resolution itself.
The increase will offset the cost of processing additional applications and returning part of the fee to the Common Application organization.
The Board will also discuss a recommendation by system President Ray Cross to increase need-based aid in the state government’s next biennial budget.
Cross suggested a biennial increase of more than $19 million in funding for the Wisconsin Grant, which provides financial aid to students who may not have otherwise been able to afford a college education.
