Missing UW-Madison sophomore studying abroad reported dead

Family members confirmed Monday the body recently found in the Tiber river is missing 19-year-old UW-Madison sophomore Beau Solomon, according to Channel 3000.

The body was found near Marconi Bridge in the river, which is about a mile south of where Solomon was seen last. Police said he was mugged and thrown into the river, according to Channel 3000.

According to a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article, Solomon was found "with a wound on his head and blood on his shirt," and his family has confirmed that the case is officially a murder investigation. 

Solomon was studying abroad in Rome, Italy at John Cabot University and he went missing late Thursday night. His wallet and phone were reported stolen and his credit cards have been used since he went missing.

Officials from John Cabot University issued a press release Monday, saying they were “deeply saddened” to announce Solomon’s death and they expressed their “most heartfelt condolences to the Solomon family and to all those who loved Beau.”

UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank also released a statement regarding Solomon's death on July 4. 

"All of us at UW-Madison are greatly saddened by this loss," Blank said in her statement. "Our hearts go out to Beau's family and friends at this difficult time. UW-Madison is working with John Cabot University and with American and Italian authorities to assist Beau's family and to support the investigation into his death."

Blank's statement mentioned that "there is no indication of a broader risk to students or others in Rome or elsewhere," but UW-Madison has no further details on the investigation.
