UW-Madison students may need to re-register to vote in the Aug. 9 primary election, according to a UW-Madison news release.
Students who were registered previously but have moved more than 28 days before Aug. 9 must re-register at their current address. Students who moved less than 28 days prior to Election Day may use their previous address.
According to the release, polling places have also changed for the summer election. Students who reside in Bradley, Cole, Dejope, Humphrey, Jorns, Kronshage, Leopold, Phillips or Sullivan residence halls must report to the Red Gym to vote. Residents of Ogg or Newell Smith residence halls will vote at the Doyle Administration Building, while those in Sellery and Witte residence halls will poll in Memorial Library.
UW-Madison spokeswoman Meredith McGlone said that the polling places are moved due to fewer students living on campus.
“Any time there is an election during the summer, the city clerk consolidates some campus polling places because many fewer students are living on campus,” McGlone said. “Even though this isn't a new thing, we want to make sure voters are aware of the different locations.”
Students are only eligible to vote if they are 18 years old on or before Aug. 9, have resided in Wisconsin for at least 28 consecutive days before voting and are registered. Voters are required to provide identification at their polling place; Wiscards are not valid voter IDs. A Wisconsin driver’s license, U.S. passport or a UW voter ID with enrollment verification are acceptable. According to the release, UW voter ID cards can still be acquired at the Wiscard Office in Union South between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
