The Institute for Research on Poverty at UW-Madison has been chosen to serve as the nation’s Poverty Research Center, according to a Monday university press release.
As the longest-standing center for poverty research in the country, the IRP will enter into a five-year, $9.5 million cooperative agreement from the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation as it approaches its 50th year of researching poverty and searching for poverty reduction tactics.
In the past, the IRP shared federal funding for its research with similar centers at the University of California, Davis, and Stanford. Now, it will be the sole recipient of that funding.
UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank praised the IRP’s work and detailed its contributions to society’s understanding of poverty and inequality.
“ASPE’s vote of confidence in IRP confirms the importance of these contributions and high expectations for future innovation and success,” Blank said in the release.
