The Multicultural Student Center hosted WAY UP, a festival that displayed student organizations representing various cultural groups, Tuesday night.
Each campus multicultural organization showcased what their group is about through posters, merchandise and food. One featured group, the UW-Madison chapter of the Christian ministry the Impact Movement, aims to provide a safe space for African American students.
“It’s a space where race and faith can collide [in discussion] at the same time,” said member Olivia Millet. “You can also just come to hear the good Word.”
The Impact Movement’s kickoff meeting will be held Sept. 21 at the Upper House on East Campus Mall.
Jewop, a culturally Jewish a capella group on campus, was also at the fair to inform students about upcoming auditions, which will be held Sept. 13 and 14 in the Humanities building. Members Chris Lueneburg and Morgan Armbruster said they encourage students of all vocal ranges to audition, Jewish or not.
One of the larger organizations at the fair was the Associated Students of Madison. ASM is a representative student government organization that is made up of a collection of committees to allow for all types of students to voice their opinions. Mariam Coker, an ASM member, joined the organization despite her disinterest in politics.
“ASM is for everybody, in my opinion,” Coker said. “I’m not a political science major, I hate politics, but I like making a change and advocating for students, so that’s why I joined.”
Coker ensures that if students come to the ASM offices in the Student Activity Center between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. someone will be there to answer questions and provide a helping hand in any way they can.
More information about ASM and the various other organizations can be found on the MSC’s website.
