Three campus roads to close starting Wednesday

Three roads will be closed on the UW-Madison campus beginning Wednesday, Sept. 14.

The first closure Wednesday will be for the addition of a right turn lane on University Bay Drive to University Avenue. According to UW-Madison transportation planner Rob Kennedy, the Village of Shorewood Hills is directing this project, which will conclude Oct. 31. This construction will narrow University Bay Drive to one lane going each direction.

Observatory Drive will close Thursday, Sept. 15 until Friday, Sept. 16 near Babcock Drive and Charter Street. According to Kennedy this closure is necessary to replace a broken water main that is being eroded and causing the road to collapse around the area. Buses will run regularly, except the 81 will not do its route at night. Walkers and bikers will be able to navigate the construction site easily, he said.

“We’re going to keep the sidewalk open on the south side of the street so it won’t create any problems for people that need to get by the workers,” Kennedy said.

Highland Avenue will also close Thursday. In order to reconstruct the road to accommodate for the expanded UW Hospital parking ramp.

“We’ve added onto the ramp on two sides which is going to require a new traffic lane out of the parking ramp that needs to be constructed,” Kennedy said.

This construction will continue until late November. A UW-Madison news release said this will narrow Highland Avenue to one lane and cause traffic suggestion. The release suggested using Walnut Street as an alternate route.

More road closures can be expected next month, according to Kennedy, as part of Langdon Street will be closed during the middle of one day to allow workers to repave the sidewalk outside Memorial Union.
