UWPD reaches out to community with ‘Coffee with a Cop’ event

The UW-Madison Police Department held its “Coffee with a Cop” event Wednesday morning where police officers handed out free coffee to students at East Campus Mall.

This is the second year UWPD has held the event. According to UWPD Director of Communications Marc Lovicott, police departments throughout the nation are hosting similar events as a way to try to make law enforcement officers more approachable.

“Offering free coffee to students is a way to start a conversation and welcome them to campus,” Lovicott said.

Students were encouraged to ask questions about UWPD. They also had the opportunity to pet some of UWPD’s K9 dogs.

Ultimately, Lovicott said he hopes events like this can bridge the gap between police officers and the community.

“We want students to realize that officers are approachable, and we’re here to help.”
