UWPD responds to reports of battery at Memorial Union

UW-Madison Police Department responded to a phone call reporting an aggravated assault at the lakeshore of Memorial Union around 1 a.m. Friday.

The male perpetrator and female victim had a relationship with each other prior to the event, according to UWPD spokesman Marc Lovicott.

“According to witnesses, the male started jokingly roughhousing with the female, but it turned quite serious to the extent where he ended up trying to strangle the victim,” Lovicott said.

The suspect, a 29-year-old white male, fled the scene before authorities arrived. According to Lovicott the police had an idea of the identity of the suspect, but were not able to contact him immediately.

UWPD arrested Brian N. Campbell Friday afternoon. He is being processed in the Dane County Jail with tentative charges of strangulation and disorderly conduct, according to Lovicott.

UPDATE September 2, 2:57 p.m.: This story was updated to include arrest details.
