Wisconsin politicians are pushing for federal aid to help recover from mass flooding last month.

Walker, Congress urge federal aid for flood-affected areas

The Wisconsin congressional delegation urged President Obama Tuesday to approve assistance for western Wisconsin regions after recent flooding.

This follows Gov. Scott Walker’s request last week, asking the Federal Emergency Management Agency to conduct a preliminary damage assessment in western Wisconsin.

Walker issued a state of emergency after flash floods, mudslides and the death of two Vernon County citizens in September.

“Torrential rain caused widespread flooding, mudslides, and damage to homes, businesses, roads, and bridges,” Walker said in the release.

The damage spanned 13 counties, and caused more than $14 million in damage.

The counties affected include: Adams, Chippewa, Clark, Columbia, Crawford, Eau Claire, Jackson, La Crosse, Monroe, Richland, Trempealeau and Vernon.

The congressional delegation, led by U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., said they hope that FEMA will provide an effective response that goes beyond state and local capabilities.

Starting Oct. 5 FEMA will address damage to public infrastructure. The assessment will determine whether or not the state can request a federal disaster declaration.
