First floor of Memorial Union to reopen Monday

The reopening of the first floor of Memorial Union, the next step in its reinvestment project, will take place Monday.

At 3 p.m. on Dec. 5, The Daily Scoop and Peet’s Coffee & Tea will begin serving customers. Badger Market, which will be in the space formerly known as The Essentials Store, will sell food items and Badger apparel. Additional study spaces will also be available.

“With final exams approaching, offering the first floor to our campus community, especially UW-Madison students, is a priority for us at the Union,” Wisconsin Union Director Mark Guthier said in a press release.

Der Rathskeller and new dining places, including a sandwich café and Italian eatery, will open in January. A grand opening celebration will occur in that month as well, following the opening of all the restaurants.

The renovations involved replacement of old plumbing, updating electrical and HVAC systems and maintenance of asbestos.

The Memorial Union Reinvestment project began during the summer of 2012 and is set to conclude Fall 2017.
