Continuing a recent series of powerful movements in Wisconsin’s GOP, the Republican Governors Association announced Wednesday that Gov. Scott Walker was elected to serve as RGA Chairman for 2017.
The appointment comes after a momentous week for Republicans. In Tuesday’s election, Wisconsin turned red in the presidential race for the first time since 1984 and U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson kept his Senate seat in a close matchup against Democrat Russ Feingold. The state GOP also gained historically large majorities in its legislature.
“The record Governor Walker has established in Wisconsin is enormously impressive, and his experience of winning three gubernatorial elections amid turning his state from blue to red will be vital to ensuring our governors and candidates have the resources they need to win in 2017,” said incumbent RGA chair and New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez in a statement.
Walker said he will focus on securing Republican victories in the two gubernatorial races next year and recruitment for the 36 races to be held in 2018, according to a press release.
