A 21-year-old man was forced to flee his house on South Broom Street around 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon after he saw a man trying to break into his back door, according to a Madison Police Department incident report.
“The victim said prior loud bangs; a person was ringing his doorbell. He did not respond, and a couple of minutes later a stranger was trying to force the back door open,” MPD Public Information Officer Joel DeSpain said in the report. “He could hear a male voice making a grunting sound. He got out the front door and called 911.”
DeSpain wrote that a responding officer did find evidence of damage to the back door, but that there was no suspect when they arrived. He said the would-be burglar was likely scared away.
“The MPD was called to a similar crime last Tuesday afternoon,” DeSpain said. “The backdoor to a home in the 300 block of W. Doty St. was kicked in. Electronics and money had been stolen while residents were away.”
