A digital strategy company says the march in Madison on Saturday had the second-highest ratio of city population who participated.
The digital strategy company, Reverbal Communications, released an analysis Monday comparing percentage of city population to turn up at the top-10 largest marches. Madison’s march was one of the largest women’s protests in the nation.
With Madison Police Department estimating up to 100,000 protesters, 41 percent of the city’s population took part in the Women’s March on Madison. The city’s participation rate only trails Washington, D.C., at 76 percent participating, where plans for the hundreds of marches across the country originated and a big destination for travelling marchers.
The other eight largest march cities to fall behind the nation’s capital and Madison for highest participation rates are St. Paul, Minn., Los Angeles, Calif., Portland, Ore., Boston, Mass., Denver, Colo., Seattle, Wash., Chicago, Ill. and New York, N.Y, respectively.
It is notable that MPD estimates for the march range from 75,000 to 100,000 participants. Reverbal Communications compares march size numbers using the upper limit; using the lower estimate, Madison would fall in third place behind St. Paul's at a 31 percent participation rate.
