The City of Madison is set to embark on a project that will “reconstruct” the south side of Capitol Square, with preliminary construction work beginning Monday.
The project will replace much of the infrastructure in the square’s southern half, including its sidewalks, gutters and sanitary sewer. The city completed a similar project on the north side of the square last year.
While the city’s work will not start until March 20, preliminary private utility work will begin on the square this week, causing road closures and other traffic disruptions.
Starting Monday, the Capitol building will not be accessible from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard for about one week. Right turns from South Carroll Street to South Hamilton Street will also be closed.
The city says it will eventually be necessary to fully close Main Street and Pinckney Street for approximately three weeks in order to replace pavement. A travel lane will remain open around the square throughout construction.
The city expects to finish the entire project by mid-August.
