UWPD assistant chief to retire after 32 years on the force

Over 32 years after joining the UW-Madison Police Department’s ranks, Assistant Chief Brian Bridges will serve his final day on the force Wednesday.

Bridges, who was hired in 1984, has been “involved in every major project that UWPD has taken on in last 20 years,” according to a release.

Bridges began his career in Washburn County’s police department, before moving to UW-Eau Claire and finally to UW-Madison. He was named assistant chief in 2010 and briefly served as interim chief last year after the retirement of Susan Riseling.

Bridges said when he retires, he will miss “the great people of UWPD and the university” the most.

“I’m also very proud of the tiny piece that I have played in hiring, developing, and watching our staff grow,” Bridges said.

Bridges’ son is also an officer with UWPD and was sworn in with his father by his side in 2014.
