UWPD uses ‘less-lethal force’ on University Hospital patient

UW-Madison Police Department responded to reports of disorderly conduct from a patient claiming to be armed at University Hospital Saturday, according to an incident report.

An individual barricaded himself in a patient room and claimed he had a gun, according to the report. Officers arrived around 6 p.m. and tried to verbally defuse the situation. They determined he did not have a gun, but instead a plastic knife, after firing a “less-lethal beanbag round” at him.

The suspect was then taken into custody with minor injuries from the beanbag. He was examined and then placed into emergency detention, and he is now in the Winnebago Mental Health Institute.

UWPD spokesperson Marc Lovicott said in the report the individual’s name was not released because it is a mental health case and he has not been charged.
