A former UW-Madison running back and first-round NFL draft pick has been sentenced to five years in California prison after pleading no contest to multiple felonies including identity theft and burglary.
Michael Bennett, who played for the Badgers from 1999-2000, was charged with burglary, attempted theft from an elder and identity theft after a 2015 incident in which Bennett broke into his girlfriend’s parents’ property and stole documents, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Bennett used the stolen documents to take out $225,000 worth of loans in the name of his girlfriend’s parents. The San Francisco Chronicle said the former Badger was on probation for a Florida wire fraud incident at the time of the theft.
The former running back pleaded no contest to the charges in late March.
