Adventure Learning Programs, which has received the largest portion of money from the General Student Services Fund over the last two years, made its case to the Student Services Finance Committee for reconfirmed eligibility at their hearing Thursday night.
ALPs is slated to have a budget of nearly $170,000 for this fiscal year. The group’s mission is to build teamwork, trust and problem solving through adventure-based workshops which can range from 45-minutes to all-day events. According to their presentation, they have served close to 3,000 students since July 1.
One of ALPs’ newest initiatives is the development of a Diversity and Inclusion Committee meant to tackle social justice issues and provide implicit bias training.
According to Cooper Beckswith, a co-director of ALPs, part of the committee’s work will be to assess the inclusivity of the organization itself.
“I think a lot of it is looking at our staff members and how well we’re trained to work with other groups and creating an inclusive community from within our organization so that we can welcome all different types of students on to campus,” Beckswith said.
The org also intends to dedicate more resources toward campus outreach to improve student participation in some of their less utilized programs.
ALPs will return to SSFC next Tuesday for the results of their hearing.
In addition, SSFC approved eligibility for Sex Out Loud and Greater University Tutoring Services through 2019 after holding hearings for the two organizations earlier this week.
Organizations that qualify for funds from the GSSF are those who offer unique educational programming not replicated in other campus resources, according to SSFC bylaws.
