Madison residents could soon face fines if they park on the wrong side of the street, as city-wide parking rules for the winter go into effect this week.
Alternate Side Parking takes effect Wednesday and runs through March 15. During that time, on even-numbered days, residents should park on the side of the street with even house numbers between 1:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. On odd-numbered days, they should park on the side with odd house numbers during the same hours.
Residents of the downtown isthmus area are exempt from the parking rules, except for during a declared snow emergency, when the entire region is considered a “snow emergency zone.” Students who live west of Park Street, however, are expected to follow the rules. Residents can check this map to see whether Alternate Side Parking applies to them.
Madison implements Alternate Side Parking during the winter in order to safely and quickly remove snow from the roadways.
Violators face a $20 fine when a snow emergency has not been declared. If an emergency has been declared, they face a $60 fine and may be towed.
