U.S. Congressman Mark Pocan is recovering at a hospital in Madison after undergoing triple bypass heart surgery Wednesday.
Pocan, a Wisconsin Democrat, is expected to remain out of Congress for several weeks to recover.
The surgery was a preemptive measure intended to prevent potential cardiac issues in the future, according to Pocan’s office.
“The surgery went well and Mark is looking forward to a speedy recovery so he can return to Washington soon to continue fighting for the people of Wisconsin,” spokesman Ron Boehmer said in a statement.
Pocan, who has represented Madison and the surrounding area since 2013, made the decision to undergo surgery after a series of medical tests last week.
