Dallet, Screnock advance to Supreme Court general election

Milwaukee Circuit Judge Rebecca Dallet will meet Sauk County Circuit Court Judge Michael Screnock in the April general election, after Madison attorney Tim Burns fell short in Tuesday's non-partisan primary.

Dallet, a Milwaukee Circuit Court Judge, beat out Burns for the larger share of support from liberal voters, while conservatives lined up behind Screnock.

Screnock was appointed by Gov. Scott Walker in 2015, and had the backing of the state Republican Party.

Dallet, though backed by many Democratic groups and even running an ad critical of President Donald Trump, emphasized the value of a non-partisan judiciary, while Burns was explicit about his Democratic identification.

The winner of the general election on April 3 will replace retiring Justice Michael Gableman, potentially altering the high court’s 5-2 conservative majority.
