MPD make two knife-related arrests Monday, one on State Street

Two men were arrested Monday night for knife-related weapons violations, with one of those events occurring on State Street.

The State Street incident occurred after a boisterous patron threatened an off-duty employee at Wisconsin Brewing Tap Haus with a nine-inch sheathed knife. He was later arrested outside of the establishment for disorderly conduct while armed after the employee called the police.

The other incident occured after an intoxicated man threatened police with a knife outside a Walgreens on East Washington Ave.

Police arrived at the scene after getting an emergency call that the individual was making a disturbance in the store. When they arrived, the man pulled a folding knife and threatened the police officers as they attempted to calm him down in the parking lot. Nobody was harmed and the suspect was safely disarmed and taken into custody.

Public Information Officer Joel DeSpain said that knives are something officers encounter fairly frequently. He added officers prepare for an interaction with both knives and firearms similarly.

"Any time [officers] encounter someone they believe is armed with a knife or gun, they would have their weapons drawn," DeSpain said.
