Pam Porter edged past Yogesh Chawla in Tuesday’s District 6 primary for Dane County Board of Supervisor, although both candidates will advance to April’s general election.
Porter won with 40.7 percent of the vote compared to 37.4 percent for Chawla. The election was held to replace incumbent John Hendrick.
District 6, while not directly on campus, includes the entirety of Williamson Street, a well-known community east of the capital square.
In a questionnaire for Our Wisconsin Revolution’s Dane County chapter, a progressive organization founded after the movement sparked during Bernie Sanders presidential campaign, Porter wrote that she’s running because she loves what her community stands for.
“Since I announced my candidacy I’ve knocked on over 1,200 doors and have sat down to talk with many of my neighbors,” she wrote. “It’s been inspiring.”
Chawla, whose parents immigrated from India in 1976, wrote that cleaning up Madison’s lakes and fixing the county’s racial disparities is a focus.
Porter and Chawla will again vie for the district’s seat in the county’s general election on April 3.
Additionally, two other districts held primaries for their a spot on the county board.
In District 11, incumbent Al Matano surpassed Kelly Donner and in District 15, Steven Peters handedly won with more than 61 percent of the vote. He’ll face Brent Renteria in the April general election.
