Madison officials and civil rights leaders hosted a commemorative rally Wednesday to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. on the 50th anniversary of his death.
More than 50 people joined city leaders on a celebratory march, which was was lead by the Forward Marching Band. The march looped around the capitol square to City Hall before returning to the City-County building.
Following the march event, organizers, including Norman Davis, director of the city’s civil rights departments, honored Dr. King with the unveiling of a new street sign for Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. .
The ceremony featured speeches from Davis and UW-Madison Ph.D student Laura Minero, among others.
Davis expressed hope for Dr. King’s legacy in the closing of his speech.
“True greatness is not limited to the stories told by history or even his story, but by what we each do in following Dr. King’s example to shape the future,” he said.
