Man arrested in Memorial Library

Shortly after midnight, University of Wisconsin Police deployed pepper spray when arresting a man in Memorial Library, according to an incident report.

Officers were originally called to perform a welfare check on the man who was sleeping in the library. After he identified himself as James Charles, 32, of Madison, UWPD officers realized Charles had an outstanding warrant for arrest.

Charles resisted when officers tried to take him into custody and refused multiple commands to stop before an officer deployed pepper spray, according to the report.

Officers booked Charles without injury in Dane County Jail for the warrant, as well as charges for resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
