UW-Madison fraternity suspended by leadership for incident at party

UW-Madison’s Kappa Sigma Fraternity had its charter withdrawn from the national branch of the organization Tuesday for an incident at a party this past weekend, according to a screenshot of an email from the Supreme Executive Committee of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

The decision comes after members of the fraternity threw a television from the roof of the Kappa Sigma house on Langdon Street, almost striking a woman at the event, according to the email.

A video of the incident— first posted to the Instagram account badgerbarstool before being picked up by the national Barstool Sports Instagram page — has close to two million views and shows the television falling within inches of the woman.

The Supreme Executive Committee of the fraternity said in the email they became aware of the incident Monday afternoon, adding that a notice was immediately sent to suspend operations of UW-Madison's Chapter.

Members of the fraternity declined multiple requests for comment.

UW-Madison spokesperson Meredith McGlone called the incident “deeply concerning” and said the university is working to confirm “precisely where and when it happened so appropriate action can be taken.”

“Given the clear risk to individual safety, the university response will reflect the seriousness of the act,” she said.

Madison police are investigating the incident, according to MPD Spokesperson Joel DeSpain, who added police determined the location of the incident from the Instagram video.

Jenna Walters contributed to this reporting.
