Former Wisconsin governor to helm UW System Business Council

Former Gov. Tommy Thompson will promote industry-student communication and job searching in his new role with the Wisconsin universities’ business council, UW System President Ray Cross announced Friday.

The council combines the work of more than 24 industry leaders throughout the state to organize universities' abilities to meet employers’ needs and expectations of students before they enter the job field.

Cross recognized Thompson’s successful economic record as a reflection of his ability to advocate for positive change in this role.

“With his leadership, the council will help further broaden and deepen university connections with business and industry,” Cross said.

During the council meeting, Thompson expressed concern for relationship between universities and businesses, and challenged them to think of ways to attract, retain and foster success for students and alumni that are planning on or currently part of the industry.

“It is a great honor to chair the UW System Business Council and to assist in guiding conversations focused on identifying the best pathways for addressing the state’s current and future talent and workforce needs,” Thompson said.

The meeting brought together UW System chancellors, along with business and industry leaders, to discuss the growing rate of graduates in popularized fields and how to expand desire and engagement of internships.

The business council has been around for two years, following strategic listening sessions ran by Cross. They were held throughout the state to incite discussion between community, industry and government stakeholders.
