Students receive WiscAlert after reported gas leak near the VA Hospital

Students were made aware of a gas leak that was reported near the Madison Veteran's Hospital this morning via WiscAlert.

In the alert, students were told to stay clear of the area surrounding the VA Hospital because campus roads including Highland, Campus Drive and Walnut had been impacted.

The public affairs officer for the VA Hospital, Paul Rickert, said two buildings were evacuated during the gas leak and that Madison Gas and Electric responded to the leak.

Due to the reported gas leak, traffic in the area was rerouted and local bike paths were closed.

According to the UW-Madison police department, the Shorewood Hills police department responded to the report.

A follow-up WiscAlert was sent to students stating that the gas leak has been located and resolved. There is no longer a threat in the area, and impacted roads are reopening.
