Madison woman scammed out of $8,800 by ‘FBI inspector,’ police say

A Madison woman lost $8,800 following a phone scam in which a man claimed to be part of the FBI.

The 31-year-old woman received a call Oct. 11 from a man who seemed to have an Arabic accent claiming to be “FBI Deputy Inspector Eddie Morra,” police said.

He told her she had a warrant out for her arrest because her name and social security number had been used for bank accounts involved with money laundering. He also said a car rented in her name was found to be linked to an apartment where police found 22 pounds of cocaine.

The man said she could prove she was “government safe” through buying gift cards from various stores and promised they would return the money to her.

The woman told Madison police she did not hang up on the man for five hours because she was afraid of going to jail. Police attempted to call the scam number back, but it was disconnected.
