The Student Services Finance Committee began talks to use the multi-million dollar university reserve fund in its meeting Monday.
When student organizations underspend their yearly budgets, those extra funds wind up in SSFC’s reserve. Over the years, the reserve has grown substantially.
“The reserve funds are excessive,” SSFC Chair Jeremy Swanson said.
Rep. William Wallo raised concerns over the depreciation of the funds over time. The longer the funds sit, the less valuable they become as inflation increases.
A formal decision on the funds would be decided by the reserve board, on which Swanson is the chair. The board will begin to make reserve budget recommendations beginning in the spring, with SSFC playing an advisory role in the process
In the past, the fund has been used to paint WSUM’s radio tower to comply with Federal Aviation Administration requirements.
