UW-Madison plans to end its affiliation with a study abroad program in Rome after a reaching a settlement in a lawsuit Monday.
In 2016, UW-Madison student Beau Solomon drowned in the Tiber River after being mugged his first night attending John Cabot University. A year later, his parents, Jodi and Nick Solomon, filed a federal lawsuit against JCU claiming the university did not provide proper safety warnings to the family by failing to mention four young adults had died within 350 feet of the university between 2014 and 2015.
Following the settlement, UW-Madison officials announced students will now be hosted at Council on International Educational Exchange: Open Campus in Rome, instead of JCU. By doing so the university aims to “mitigate risks to students abroad.”
Details of the settlement have not been released.
