Madison voters chose Satya Rhodes-Conway as their next mayor in a landslide election Tuesday. She unseated longtime incumbent Mayor Paul Soglin.
Rhodes-Conway, a former alder on Madison’s city council, defeated Soglin by about 19,000 votes. She is the first challenger to knock Soglin out of the mayor’s office in his 22 non-consecutive years in the position.
Soglin and Rhodes-Conway emerged victorious in February’s mayoral primary, beating out District 8 Ald. Maurice Cheeks, River Alliance of Wisconsin Executive Director Raj Shukla, City of Madison Racial Equity Coordinator Toriana Pettaway and local comedian Nick Hart.
In a battle between two UW-Madison freshmen, Avra Reddy came out ahead in the race for District 8, defeating Matthew Mitnick by about 150 votes.
Three women — Ali Muldrow, Ananda Mirilli and Cristiana Carusi — were elected to the Madison Metropolitan School Board, making the next term an exclusively female one.
