Two dead following swimming leg of Ironman 70.3 Wisconsin

Two Ironman 70.3 Wisconsin athletes have died following two separate swimming emergencies during Sunday’s race.

One of the athletes was Madison Fire Department Apparatus Engineer Todd Mahoney, who had been with the MFD since 2010, the City of Madison reported. Officials rescued him from Lake Monona Sunday morning and transported him to the hospital, where he remained in critical condition until passing away Tuesday, according to the city.

The other athlete, Michael McCulloch of Cottage Grove, was pronounced dead at the hospital Sunday after paramedics performed lifesaving efforts on the shore and en route to further care.

There is no additional information on the causes of death at this time, as the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office is still investigating.
