Popular regional bus companies will no longer load passengers outside of Memorial Union due to safety and traffic concerns, like narrow streets and sidewalks that are heavily populated by pedestrians and bicyclists.

Intercity bus lines to move from Langdon to Lake Street

Starting on Tuesday, Nov. 5th, Jefferson, Badger Bus and Lamer bus lines will relocate from Langdon Street to the west side of Lake Street.

The popular bus companies will no longer load passengers on the 200 Langdon Block bus stop, located outside of Memorial Union, due to safety and traffic concerns — Badger Bus stated that the current location presents safety issues from narrow streets and sidewalks that are heavily populated by pedestrians and bicyclists.

Instead, intercity buses will load near Gordon Dining and Event Center, on the west side of the street, according to the City of Madison.

Additionally, the city will install signs designating the new bus stop, bag parking meters to indicate spots unavailable for public parking and implement two bus shelters for passengers of the intercity bus line.

Representatives from the intercity bus companies will be occasionally stationed near Langdon street to inform passengers unaware of the new change.

Coach USA buses will begin loading passengers along Lake Street as well on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2020.

David Trowbridge, the principal transportation planner with the city, explained the bus companies were “almost relieved” of the relocation, according to Cap Times.

“There’s not a whole lot of space on Langdon Street for everything that wants to happen there,” Trowbridge said.

Although the 200 block of Lake Street is convenient — it is adjacent to Langdon Street — it will have to be closed due to the Kohl Center events up to 50 times a year, said City Transportation Director Tom Lynch.

Despite this disadvantage, the city emphasized this change will work to ensure a safer and less chaotic environment, in the interest of passengers of all the different bus lines.
