UW-Madison's police department will be testing the new language system on Jan. 31.

UW-Madison to be first U.S. college campus to offer emergency alerts in multiple languages

UW-Madison’s police department announced Thursday that its WiscAlerts, or emergency messaging system, will soon appear in six different languages, becoming the first university in the country to offer multiple languages in their emergency alert system.

WiscAlerts send text messages to staff and students in the event of an emergency or any other situation that may impact campus safety or operations.

Under the new protocol, two text messages will be sent to the public. The first will give general information about the situation and the second will contain a link to a message that will translate the message to five other languages: Spanish, Hmong, Tibetan, Chinese and Nepali.

An example of the translated format can be found here.

UWPD will be testing the new alert system on Jan. 31 at 1 p.m.
