On Sunday, the Wisconsin Badgers (3-12 Big Ten, 11-15 overall) women’s basketball team travelled to Iowa City to face the No. 19 Iowa Hawkeyes (12-3 Big Ten, 21-5 overall), but the Badgers came up short, losing 97-71.
The Hawkeyes started out the game strong, taking a 28-16 lead after the first quarter. However, the Badgers fought back, and kept the game within reach in the second and third quarters.
However, the Badgers were outscored by 10 in the fourth quarter, and fell by a lopsided final, 97-71.
Imani Lewis led the Badgers in scoring with 17. Lewis’s was dominant in the paint, as she didn’t shoot a single three all night. Lewis also notched a double-double with 12 rebounds.
She is now ranked 10th all time in Wisconsin history for double doubles – a historic feat after putting up 11 such games this year.
Two freshmen also stood out for the Badgers. Sydney Hilliard scored 10 points, and Sara Stapleton scored eight, a career high. Stapleton also had five offensive rebounds and six overall.
Iowa also had multiple standout players, as four Hawkeyes scored over 10 points, with Kathleen Doyle and McKenna Warnock breaking 20.
A main concern for the Badgers in this game was their shooting, as they shot 33.8 percent from the field. Iowa, on the other hand, shot 54.8 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from behind the three point line.
Iowa actually had more turnovers than the Badgers, but due to a lack of shooting Wisconsin was unable to capitalize. The same trend is shown with rebounding. Wisconsin had 40 rebounds but were unable to convert on many of their offensive opportunities.
Wisconsin will finish out the season next week against two challenging opponents. The
Badgers face No. 10 Maryland on Wednesday and No. 19 Northwestern on Saturday, both at the Kohl Center.
