Amid coronavirus outbreaks in Italy, CET Academic Programs has offered two options to current UW-Madison students in Florence: depart home to the U.S. for three weeks, study remotely and return before March 23 or remain in Florence and continue attending classes in person.
UW-Madison’s study abroad office echoed CET’s options in an email and encouraged students to “work to make the decision that you feel is best for you.”
CET and UW-Madison courses have operated normally, but all class field trips and museum visits have been postponed to avoid crowds. CET has also recommended its students refrain from traveling for the weekend of Feb. 27 to March 1.
The number of coronavirus cases in Italy has exceeded 400, a 25 percent increase in confirmed cases in 24 hours, according to BBC News. Multiple U.S. colleges, including New York University, Syracuse University and Stanford University have cancelled their Florence programs and urged their students to leave the city.
