A Madison resident was arrested Tuesday after committing three counts of fraud, using counterfeit money during each incident. Over $13,000 in counterfeit money was later located in the suspect’s possession, said University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Department Director of Communications Marc Lovicott.
Ishmael D. Riley, 26, was confronted for his use of counterfeit money by a Capital Cafe employee, according to a UW-Madison Police Department release. The incident was reported on Oct. 11. However, the release reports Riley made at least two other visits to the cafe, which is located inside the Wisconsin School of Business.
“During one of the incidents, when an employee confronted him about the counterfeit money, Riley became verbally aggressive and threatened staff while holding a pair of scissors,” the release said.
The suspect was both identified and arrested on Tuesday, following a UWPD investigation and security camera usage. Riley was taken into custody, where officials found over $13,000 of counterfeit money in his backpack, according to the UWPD release.
“Riley was booked into the Dane County Jail for disorderly conduct while armed and three counts of using counterfeit money,” said the UWPD. “The case has also been referred to the United States Secret Service.”
Riley is not officially connected to the university.
