A balcony on the 500 block of Mifflin Street collapsed under several residents at noon this Saturday during the annual Mifflin Street block party. Madison Police have confirmed at least one injury.
No official cause for the balconies collapse has been released, however, a large number of residents were seen crowded onto the structure moments prior to its collapse.
One witness to the incident, Carter Chojnacki, described the aftermath of the collapse, stating that he observed several injuries and that one resident was seen clinging to the railing of the damaged structure.
“It fell really slow, but there were people's heads bleeding afterward. It was pretty crazy,” Chojnacki said. “Someone was holding on for dear life, they held on for like five minutes but the cops told him to come down.”
Emergency crews have since responded to the incident and have closed off the 500 block of Mifflin to clear debris and administer medical attention.
