The Wisconsin Badgers delivered some unfortunate news on Monday as head coach Paul Chryst confirmed backup quarterback Chase Wolf would be out indefinitely after suffering an injury last week.
WISN 12 Sports Director Mario Melendez first reported on Monday morning that the fifth-year senior suffered a torn meniscus and will likely be out for the season.
"I really liked what he was doing in camp. Yet the one thing I know [is] that Chase will stay in it and when he can get back he’ll be ready to go,” Chryst said regarding Wolf’s efforts prior to the injury.
Wolf was slated to back up redshirt junior Graham Mertz and will be a significant loss to the team.
Even if Mertz doesn’t miss any time this season, the remaining quarterback room is very inexperienced. Wolf was the only backup with any real game experience and his knowledge of the offense would have helped jumpstart the development of inexperienced offensive players on the team.
Former four-star recruit and redshirt freshman Deacon Hill is expected to take over as the backup quarterback, although Chryst didn’t name an immediate replacement.
The Badgers will open the season at home against the Illinois State Redbirds at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
