Two months left… Have you done everything you wanted to do in Madison this year? Hopefully, some of you can confidently answer that with an easy “Yes,” but most students would be jaw-dropped realizing there are only two months left this year.
Being a first-year student, I worried I hadn’t done everything I wanted to during my freshman year of college when it dawned on me that we only have seven weeks left of the school year. Therefore, I decided to make a bucket list of items to fulfill by the end of the semester.
- The polar plunge
It’s not prime season for the plunge anymore, but before the frozen lake melts entirely, jumping in the freezing cold water with friends definitely seems like an unforgettable experience.
- Rubbing Lincoln’s toe
This is a tradition I just recently learned about, and will practice sacredly from here on out with round two of midterms and finals week around the corner. Legend has it, you will do well on your exams if you rub the toe of the Abe Lincoln statue atop Bascom Hill. And let me tell you, I could surely use it.
- Explore small businesses
There are a number of small businesses on State Street, Monroe Street and really, all over Madison. There are countless hidden gems to stumble upon, so it would be fulfilling to spend a day or two exploring.
If you’re living in a dorm, plan a fun outing for you and your floormates. You only get the dorm experience once, so you might as well soak it up while you can.
- Hit the farmers market a few more times
The Dane County Farmers’ Market on Capitol Square reopens on April 15, according to the Market’s website, and will stay through November. I can assure you I’ll be walking around munching on some Chris & Lori’s Bakehouse scones, enjoying the nice weather with friends the second the market opens back up.
- Enjoy final meals
Pick a day to eat at the dining hall one last time with your freshman year friends. Whether you’re a strong Gordon’s stan or not, most students only use the dining halls for one year, so why not round it out with a classic meal with your pals one last time before leaving for the summer.
- Spend some time outside
Soak up these last few weeks with friends sitting out on Memorial Union Terrace watching sunsets over the lake. The classic union chairs tend to reappear during the second or third week of April and foster a great environment to make memories rounding out the year.
This list could go on and on as there are endless activities to do in Madison before the year ends, but I highly encourage all students to make a bucket list of things to do in Madison before summer break.
