University police rescued three students early Friday morning after they fell below the ice of Lake Mendota.
All three students, who fell into the water near the Wisconsin Alumni Association on Lake Street around 2:00 a.m. Friday, were uninjured, according to the UW-Madison Police Department.
One person had already made their way to shore but two were still in the water when police responded, UWPD said in press release.
UWPD used cameras to find the students, who communicated their location with the Madison Fire Department to bring the students safely to shore. All three students refused medical treatment.
Although Lake Mendota has not completely thawed, this winter is warmer than years past, and experts say the ice is not safe for students. UWPD urged students away from future icy lake walks, citing recent warm temperatures.
Madison reached 59 degrees Fahrenheit on Thursday, according to data from the Dane County Truax Field Station.
