Wes Sparkman joins Dane County executive race

Wesley Sparkman joined District 33 Supervisor Dana Pellebon, Ald. Regina Vidaver and Sen. Melissa Agard in the race for Dane County executive.

Wes Sparkman, director of Dane County’s Office for Equity and Inclusion, announced his candidacy for Dane County executive Thursday.

Sparkman, a former member of Madison’s police and fire commision, has a history of working in municipal roles.

“Throughout my career, I have been deeply involved in various roles that have prepared me for the position of Dane County executive,” Sparkman told The Daily Cardinal.

In addition to this position, Sparkman was a Community Development Block Grant Commissioner — a position where he “gained valuable insights into the needs of communities surrounding Madison” — and chaired the University of Wisconsin-Madison Sociology Department’s board of visitors.

Sparkman said he has also provided American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) leadership in bargaining for Local 1871 Dane County Professionals Union, among other positions.

“These experiences have equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of public administration, community development and strategic leadership,” Sparkman said.

Sparkman said his decision to run for county executive is an extension of his career of service to the Dane County community.

“I am driven by the opportunity to apply my experience, knowledge and passion for public service to lead Dane County towards a future of inclusive growth, fiscal responsibility and enhanced community well-being,” Sparkman said.

Sparkman said his commitment to Dane County started when he began undergraduate studies at the UW-Madison, where he later went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a master’s degree in Public Affairs.

“Having lived [in Madison] since I was 17, my deep-rooted connection to this community and my understanding of its diverse needs have inspired me to step forward,” Sparkman said. “My family’s journey here, combined with the recognition and support I’ve received fuel my desire to give back to a community that has given me so much.”

Overall, Sparkman said he feels he is the best candidate for Dane County executive because of his knowledge, passion and objectives for the community.

“My vision for Dane County is one of balanced progress, where every decision is made with the well-being of our residents in mind,” Sparkman said. “My dedication to public service and proven track record of effective leadership position me as the ideal candidate to navigate the complexities of this role and lead Dane County into a prosperous future.”
