The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents unanimously approved James Beeby as UW-La Crosse's next chancellor Wednesday afternoon.
The Regents appointed Beeby after meeting in closed session Wednesday to deliberate on a search and screen committee’s recommendation for the position.
The move comes after UW-La Crosse hosted forums early last week for three finalists for the position. Beeby’s appointment fills a spot left by former Chancellor Joe Gow, who was fired in late December for his appearances in adult films on pornographic websites.
Beeby will be responsible for building the reputation of the university in addition to regular administrative tasks, according to UW-La Crosse.
“Dr. Beeby’s extensive experience will be a great asset to UW-La Crosse,” UW System President Jay Rothman said in a Wednesday press release. “He has a proven record in student success and collaboration that will be extraordinarily valuable for the entire campus and its community.”
Before being appointed as chancellor, Beeby spent three years as the provost and vice president of academic affairs at Keene State College, a small liberal arts institution in New Hampshire.
Originally from a small village in eastern England, Beeby worked as a history professor and in administrations across six U.S. higher education institutions over the last 24 years.
“I am very excited to join UW-La Crosse,” Beeby said in the press release. “I am drawn to this opportunity because of the university’s public mission and fine reputation.”
Beeby will begin as chancellor on July 1.
