The No. 5 Wisconsin Badgers men’s soccer team never led the Hoosiers but never trailed by more than one goal in Tuesday’s suspenseful match that ultimately ended in a 3-2 loss.
The first goal that put Indiana on the scoreboard came in the 13th minute by Collins Oduro. But just 10 minutes later, Wisconsin’s junior striker Thomas Raimbault struck a rebounded ball from just inside the box, deep into the back of the net.
The score remained at a 1-1 draw until the second half of play. In the 49th minute, senior forward Tommy Mihalic put the Hoosiers back up. The Badgers responded once again in the 62nd minute as sophomore defender Ellis Jones picked up his first career goal as a Badger. Dean Boltz and Roberto Burlew set up Jones, who rebounded a ball that was just a yard or two out and passed it into the back of the net.
Indiana’s final answer and reclaiming of the lead came two minutes later in the 64th minute. Oduro found his second goal of the night.
The Hoosiers defeated the Badgers 3-2 with just four shots on goal to Wisconsin’s eight. Wisconsin also had 12 corner kicks to Indiana’s three, but they failed to capitalize on those opportunities.
The Badgers are now 6-2-1 overall but notably 1-2-1 in the Big Ten Conference, a record that they look to improve on against conference opponent Rutgers on Friday. The Badgers will host the Scarlet Knights for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
